Patologia Cabeça e Pescoço / Patologia Oral Canadá

Professor of Pathology, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

I graduated BSc (Medical Science) from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland 1971 and MB ChB from the University of Dundee in 1974.  After residency training at Guy’s Hospital, London and at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, I passed the examinations for MMed (Anat Path) and MRCPath (UK) in 1983.  From 1982-1985 I was senior lecturer/consultant at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, before returning to England as consultant in Histopathology at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.  I remained there until 2013, until I was appointed as Professor of Pathology at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

During this time, I developed an interest in head and neck pathology, and I have since published more than 90 papers, mainly on surgical pathology of the salivary glands, but also sinonasal neoplasms.  I have written chapters in several textbooks, including the 2nd edition of Gnepp’s Diagnostic Surgical Pathology of the Head and Neck, as well as the upcoming 3rd edition.  I have also contributed to the WHO Blue Books on Head and Neck Tumours in 2005 and 2017.

I have been involved as speaker and organiser of 7 courses of the European School of Pathology in Turin, Italy, plus other European cities, as well as courses organized by the IAP British Division in Bosnia, Tunisia and East Africa.  I have also been an invited speaker at several International IAP and European Congresses, as well as in places as varied as the Czech Republic, Transylvania, St. Petersburg, Pakistan, India, UAE, Peru, Canada and New York.  In particular, in Brazil I was an invited speaker at the Intercontinental Congress in Igauçu Falls in 2004, the IAP congress in São Paulo in 2010 and the Congress of the Brazilian society of Pathology in the beautiful city of Florianópolis in 2013.

My research interests are in clinical histopathology and in practical diagnosis, and I am currently looking at variants of salivary duct carcinoma.  I am a regular referee for Histopathology, Virchows Archives and other journals.  I was chairman of the European Society of Pathology Working Group on Head and Neck Pathology 2011-13, having previously served as secretary of the European Society of Pathology 2003-09 and on the councils of the British Division of the IAP and the Association of Clinical Pathologists.
